Kayak Rental FAQ
Kayaking in Austin is safe for people of all skill levels, including beginners. We use high quality equipment that’s well maintained, and our rowing experts can help you select the kayak that’s best suited for your adventure on Lady Bird Lake.
Anyone under 13 years old will be required to wear a lifejacket, and it’s highly recommended for everyone else. But don’t worry, we have lifejackets in all sizes that are free to use with your rental.
They sure can!
Nope. For regular rentals we operate on a first come, first served basis. On the weekends during the middle of the day there may be a short line for processing, but you can always enjoy beautiful Zilker Park while we get your kayak ready.
At Rowing Dock we provide lifejackets and paddles, but there are a few things we highly recommend taking on your kayaking trip on Lady Bird Lake. While we sell sunscreen, water, and hats at the dock, you are welcome to bring your own as they are the top three additional items you’ll want on the water. Kayaking down Lady Bird Lake provides a lot of opportunities for amazing pictures of the Austin skyline, Barton Springs, Congress Bridge and much more. If you need, we have dry bags at the dock to keep your cameras and smartphones protected.
Regular Rentals are our top of the line Kayaks, Canoes, and Stand Up Paddleboards that are available to rent by the hour on a first come first served basis.
Specialty Rentals are reservation based premium rentals. These include but are not limited to our Pedal Kayaks that offer a hands-free kayaking experience and our Fishing Kayaks that are set up to accommodate you and your gear for a day of fishing on Lady Bird Lake.
Regular rental rates are by the hour. We collect payment for the first hour of rentals up front. If you stay out on the water longer than an hour, additional charges will accrue and are prorated by the half hour up to MAX Price per boat. For clarification, after you reach the MAX Price additional charges do NOT accrue. You will pay your remaining balance when you check your boats back in at the returns window.
For regular rental items, you are welcome to stay out on the water as long you prefer; however, you must return your boats BEFORE we close. Make sure to check our current hours of operation as they change throughout the year.
Instead of an All-Day rate, we offer a competitive MAX rental pricing structure. This offers you the flexibility to decide how long you want to paddle once you are on the water vs. having to decide up front.
