what is SUP?

SUP is the fastest growing h2o sport in the world! It’s the latest craze to sweep the inland waterways creating a buzz and earning a reputation as a walk-on-water phenomenon and uniquely soulful experience.

Stand Up Paddling, or SUP, ignited in the Hawaiian Islands by world class waterman like Dave Kalama, Blane Chambers, and Laird Hamilton. SUP roots are based in traditional surfing methodology, but take the sport a
step further by utilizing a canoe-style paddle to propel through the water
and help carve the face of the wave.

Most surf historians agree the sport originated when surf instructors on the beaches of Waikiki began paddling into the line-up to take photos of their clients learning to surf. The sport really gained momentum in the mid 90’s when locals took up SUP’n  as an opportunity to keep fit and enjoy the ocean in the summer months when Hawaiian swells go flat. Because SUP doesn’t require waves it allowed surfers to be on the water and stay conditioned in the absence of surf. To enjoy SUP one simply needs a body of water, whether it be a lake, river, estuary, lagoon, harbor or bay.

Stand Up Paddling is a hybrid sport incorporating several disciplines to create one of the best core work-outs available. SUP utilizes lower, mid and upper body muscle groups providing a work-out that is second to none. The low-impact core training is one of the fundamental reasons why SUP has gained so much momentum and popularity throughout the world.

From youth to grandparents, everyone who tries it (and they do!) finds a newfound passion for the water and gains a deeper connection with the balance of nature.

Our partners at Austin Paddle Sports ensure that we have the very best boards on Lady Bird Lake. Try one of our Randy French Softtops or a Infinity Ku Ku Hoe board, both manufactured by Surftech, for a true stand-up paddling experience. Yes, the board does make a difference. The Surftech name is synonymous with quality and has a great reputation in the surfing and paddle surfing communities. The Surftech Tuflite technology allows a board to be strong without yielding performance. Cover more water, take better turns, and enjoy the sport more fully with a proper board.  Talk to the team at Austin Paddle Sports for a full line-up of paddle boards, or stop by Rowing Dock and see the difference for yourself.
